What types of conflicts are resolved through mediation or conciliation?

  • Landlord/tenant: security deposit returns, lease issues, repairs, rent increases, terminations of tenancy
  • Neighbor-to-neighbor: Noise, pets, property lines, fences, parking, trees, common driveways,
  • Mobilehome parks: Maintenance, park rules, pets and trees
  • Individuals: disagreements among housemates, roommates
  • Organizational: disagreements involving Home Owners Associations, or members of community organizations
  • Consumer: issues involving mechanics, merchants, contractors
  • Workplace: Co-workers, supervisor-employee
Here are some examples of typical mediation cases that the Mediation Center handles:
  • A landlord and tenant disagree over whether the plumbing in a rental unit needs to be repaired and argue when the landlord can enter the unit to make the repairs.
  • A landlord and tenant disagree over the cleaning and damage charges deducted from a security deposit.
  • A mobilehome owner disagrees with park management over who is responsible for removing a dangerous tree
  • A neighbor's dog barks late into the night, keeping you from sleeping and frightening your children.
  • Your neighbor won’t talk to you about rebuilding the fence bordering your properties and won’t trim a tree that is damaging the fence.
  • A couple has a dispute with a local merchant regarding a product they purchased.
  • An employee at a local company has an ongoing personality conflict with a co-worker.
  • A consultant claims a business owes her additional fees for work performed on a project.
  • A homeowner is unhappy with a contractor’s work and feels the work should be redone at the contractor’s expense.
The following types of conflicts are NOT handled by the Mediation Center:
  • Family court issues – i.e., divorce, child custody
