Small Claims Advisory Services

When going to court is your best or only option, the small claims advisor can help. Advisors are available by phone to answer questions about small claims court forms and procedures, give you valuable information about how to prepare your claim or defense, and explain your options after you have gone to court. Typical questions the advisor can answer include:

  • How do I decide who to name as a defendant?
  • What are the ways that the court documents can be served?
  • If I win my case, what are the next steps?
  • What happens if there is an appeal?

The advisor cannot evaluate the merits of your case or predict the judge's decision.

You can contact an advisor:

State law only permits advisors to assist people with small claims cases -- not evictions, criminal or traffic violations, or family law matters -- and the advisor cannot represent you in court. If you need legal assistance for these types of cases, check our "links" page for information about other programs and services.
